National Youth Pipe Band of Scotland joins Diamond Jubilee Parade

One of Scotland’s most talented musical groups, The National Youth Pipe Band of Scotland, will join the Diamond Jubilee celebrations in Perth on 2nd June 2012. The group, a growing force in the pipe world will join 1,000 pipers and drummers from around the World.

The National Youth Pipe Band of Scotland is a non-competing cutting edge performance pipe band for 10-25 year olds in Scotland. Launched in 2002 by The National Piping Centre, the National Youth Pipe Band is the first and only organisation of its kind to bring together Scotland’s most talented young musicians at a national level. Membership is drawn from across Scotland’s 32 councils, and young pipers and drummers come from an array of different competing pipe bands and musical backgrounds, brought together as a collection of the very best chosen to play for their country. The National Youth Pipe Band provides unique development opportunities for its young members and an exceptional musical experience for its audiences. The NYPB is a dynamic, exciting, and modern spin on the traditional pipe band experience, and performs both at home and abroad. Continue reading

Perth in bid for city status

Bookmakers (William Hill) have placed Perth in the top two in the race for winning city status. Perth is one of 26 entrants in the Diamond Jubilee City Status Competition to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Queen’s ascension to the throne.

A determined effort has been led by Provost John Hulbert of Perth and Kinross Council to officially regain the grandeur lost in government reorganisation over quarter of a century ago. With the announcement expected next month, the efforts appear to be paying off, with bookmaker William Hill placing Perth as second favourite.

Thomas Grotrian: 1973-2011

It is with great sadness that I share the news that Thomas Grotrian has passed away. Our thoughts are with his family at this time.

Thomas Grotrian was instrumental in developing the World’s biggest massed pipe band in Edinburgh, 1995.  It was his vision and determination that brought thousands of pipers and drummers together to march along Princes Street to raise funds for Marie Curie Cancer Care.

It was this event that became the inspiration for Pipefest and since 1995, massed pipe band parades under the Pipefest banner have taken place in Edinburgh, New York, Chicago, the US Grand Prix, Indianapolis, Rome, Paris, Basel, Kyoto, Shanghai and Nova Scotia. Over £750,o00 has been raised for cancer charities by the players taking part and spectators along route. Highlights have included: the Millennuim Piping Festival attended by HRH Prince Charles; marching through Manhattan led by Sir Sean Connery and Mayor Bloomberg; marching under the Eiffel Tower in Paris; opening the US Grand Prix in a parade led by Sir Jackie Stewart; and Pipefest 2005 which attracted players from 32 countries.

After Pipefest 2005, Tom summed-up working on massed pipe band events: “we have had great fun”.  Indeed – there are many great memories, proud moments & fun times, all thanks to Tom!

Magnus

Tom’s funeral will take place on Thursday, 11th August. Tom’s family would like to invite a number of pipers and drummers to play at the funeral. Updates will be published on this site.
